In 2016, Willie Withers was bored and broke. The only thing he seemed to do well was music but his studio was gathering dust by the second. However, all Willie cared about was surviving a hellhole apartment and meeting new girls. During Hurricane Matthew, Withers met a girl in Tampa that had piqued his interest.
Here is what Willie Withers had to say about the inspiration behind the song “LaLa”. “As life would have it, when we got back to our colleges, she happened to live in a neighboring one to mine. I caught the bus to her school one afternoon and we hung out for the rest of the day. In that day, I realized how blind I was to how she was hurting. She had lost her dad that summer and all she did was smoke weed to ease her grief. She had some bitterness towards him because he had cheated on her mother that same summer, but still she tried her hardest to appear indifferent to the situation. I remember feeling sad for her, but in a way also sad for myself for being so short-sighted as to expect anything romantic from her in her current state. I was a bit lost at that time, doing things that were out of my character. That is where LaLa comes from: inspired by my lost ways and the girl self-medicating to escape.”
