Searing guitar work by Grammy-winner Paul Nelson blends jazz, rock and blues in this inventive fusion medley that combines “Moanin'” (Bobby Simmons) with “Blue Monk” (Thelonious Monk). Deviating between tunes as well as blues and jazz styles. Also featured: Mike Nappi on drums, Tobin Mueller on acoustic piano, organ and synths.
The arrangement begins traditionally enough, presenting the great blues standard, Moanin’, almost like a Big Band yet with small combo instrumentation. But the tune quickly transforms into modern fusion as “Blue Monk” takes over. Mike Nappi’s drumming adeptly fuses the jazz and rock world with a New Orleans shuffle groove, setting the stage for Paul Nelson’s powerful electric guitar work. Tobin Mueller’s piano seems to channel Thelonious Monk, emphasizing harmony over lead phrasing, creating a nice contrast to the intricate guitar solo. The Trilogy bass weaves a dreamy pulse just beneath the surface. One of the great new tracks from “Standard Deviations”. It appears on Volume 1 track 5.
“Standard Deviations” is a 2-volume collection of the greatest Jazz Standards of all time… re-imagined. Melodies deviate one into another, styles deviate into related genres, and arrangements deviate from the standard originals creating a fresh, hip, innovative sound. Contemporary jazz musicians bind together blues, funk, fusion, smooth, new age and post-bop jazz, depending on the arrangement. 33 classics arranged into 24 tracks over 2 CDs.
