Tobin Mueller – Forrest’s Fire from “Come In Funky” and “The Muller’s Wheel”

This progressive funk recording is so good it appears on two of Tobin Mueller’s jazz albums: “Come In Funky” (featuring Ron Carter) and “The Muller’s Wheel” (featuring Woody Mankowski). Fabulous sax playing by Forrest “Woody” Mankowski flies over the top of this unusual groove, named after himself. “The Muller’s Wheel” orders the tracks in ascending order from early jazz influences to later ones. This is track 9, following on the heels of an older school funk tune. The album is a great ride, check it out.

But the track also appears on the quirky album Mueller did with Ron Carter that features a series of duets Mueller performs with the legendary jazz bassist. Each duet is interrupted by a hip funk tune, which is where “Forrest’s Fire”comes in, remastered. Mueller & Mankowski were purposefully pushing the boundaries of funk. The piece employs unusual time signatures and unique changes, enabling Mankowski to really burn up the track.

The video is illustrated by images of summer in the city, adding to the heat. Better than a forest burning down, and more fun. The track makes you want to dance through the spraying waters of a broken fire hydrant, that’s for sure. See www.tobinmueller.com/funk/ for more information.
